Hi Natalie, sorry I haven't replied for so long. I asked my mil and she said they didn't have anyone new in Hartington, but that Bow Valley did get a new priest so maybe that's where Fr. Olsen is. Very lovely church there, lots of…
The strawberry pie is from a recipe on Pioneer Woman's "tasty kitchen" link. I was so happy to find this recipe because (is this pathetic?) I've missed it ever since Village Inn quit making it almost 15 years ago. Is it also…
Hi Anna, your DH is from Hartington, if I am correct that is the lucky parish that Fr. Eric Olson is recently assigned to. A very gifted and one-of-a-kind priest that O'Neill was blessed to have for a while. We hope to get over there for mass…
Hi Anna,
I am originally from Canistota, SD, (30 miles west of Sioux Falls). I graduated from USD in Vermillion in 1983 and moved to the DC area for graduate school. Met my husband here and consider Northern VA home, but get back to the midwest a…
Hi Donna,
I asked dh (since his family is huge and I can't keep track at all). He's sure they're related somewhere along the line, since they're from the same area, but he doesn't know him offhand. Are your in-laws from out…
We took Bradley classes before our first and loved it. Dh and I both felt very prepared and I think he liked not only having the knowledge, but also having the ability to truly help me through instead of being a helpless bystander. I felt like he…

Are you related to Dr. Bill Dendiger in Vermillion, SD? My sister-in-law is a good friend of the family (has been his nurse for many years) and I have some great coincidences to share if he is, in fact, someone you know!

Hi Anna,
I am originally from Canistota, SD, (30 miles west of Sioux Falls). I graduated from USD in Vermillion in 1983 and moved to the DC area for graduate school. Met my husband here and consider Northern VA home, but get back to the midwest a couple of times a year to visit my elderly mom and other family. (In fact, I quite often fly Midwest into Omaha and rent a car from there, due to that airline usually having the best price.)
My sister-in-law (Rennee) ended up in Vermillion when my brother, a piano professor, was offered a position at USD in the mid 1970s. He died of a heart attack in 1994 (yes, he was quite young) but my sister-in-law remained in Vermillion as it had become home to her. She worked for Bill for a long time, and is now the director of nursing in the clinic with which he is associated. His wife Cindi is one of her best friends. Because Rennee and I are close and they do a lot of stuff (church and family-related, etc) I hear all the stories and I feel like I know everyone really well! I can tell you that Bill grew up in Yankton, his dad was a dentist, and I think he was the only boy, with a bunch of sisters. Bill just turned 60, I think (I heard about the bday party) and his mom is still living in Yankton. I should know her first name, but cannot recall it right now. :-)
The REALLY funny coincidence is this - one of my neighbors here and I met at the "tot lot" about 15 years ago. She asked my where I was from, because she detected my midwestern "accent". Turns out she is a dentist who grew up in Nebraska, but has tons of cousins in Sioux Falls, whose names I recognize. In getting to know each other over the years, it turns out that she grew up knowing the Dendiger family because her dad and Bill's dad were both dentists in the area where SD and Nebraska border each other. Also, one of Bill's sisters is a dentist, and she runs into her at dental conferences periodically. I know, long, run-on story, but as I said, I feel like I know them all really well!
I have also found that there are only about 2 degrees of separation between me and anyone I run into from that part of the country!
PS Ha, thanks for the compliment about the picture. Don't be fooled. It was taken at my office. I WISH my books at home were that well-organized....
