I "try" to "work from home". I have the same trouble with selling things mentioned in another discussion. Although, I will admit I am doing a little better with Pampered Chef than I have done with some other "opportunities".

I joined PC because I thought it would create an opportunity for me to get out of the house at least once in a while. Hasn't worked that way - sick children, school activities, etc. So I've been doing the giving catalogs to my friends and gathering their orders. Glad I'm not depending on this for a steady source of income. The discount on my own products is nice though.

My husband and I are jointly involved with Pre-Paid Legal. Great company. This economy is making it tough to sell the plans and sign up potential Associates. We started selling the plans because we believe in the product, not because we wanted to "get rich and retire to some exotic location" although that would be nice.

I am a licensed cosmetologist and a licensed foster parent. Yep BUSY! and I don't even work as a cosmetologist - I graduated from cosmetology school pregnant with child #2 and got my license a month before she was born.

On top of all of that... I am on the Creative Teams of several digital scrapbook product designers, which basically means I offer my time and talent to help them promote their products. They give me the products for free. I scrap with it. I post to my blog, to Facebook, and in the galleries of various digital scrapbooking sites. That's it. My hobby is pretty much paid for! :)

Did I mention that I'm married for 16 years, a mother of 4, pending adoptive mother of 1, current foster mother of 1, and former foster mother of 12? My biological children are 14, 7, 4 (today), and 1 year old. My adoptive daughter is almost 2 and my foster daughter is 2 1/2 years old. Foster daughter will be moving soon to a forever family where she can be reunited with her two brothers! We're so excited to be part of this transition for the better in her life.

I would love to homeschool again. We used Seton when we did it for a year (a long time ago). Our state does not allow foster children to be home schooled, it was too difficult to juggle the homeschool schedule, homeschool group, public school, and the kids' extra curricular activites (karate, band, girl scouts, cub scouts, etc.) I supplement (read "deprogram") what the public school teaches that's contrary to our faith the best I can.

Good luck to those searching for "work from home" opportunities or already doing the "home based business" thing!

Welcome Lynn -
I'm in direct sales as well so I would be happy to help you find some additional support for your PC career if you would like.

It's a pleasure to have you a part of our WAH group here on Faith and Family!
Hi Lynn, I am new to the site and the group (check my bio on a different post). I do want to respond to your post though. To begin with , I love your family story, you are a truly neat lady. I can totally relate to your quest for legitimate work from home that does more than support a hobby. I have done it all, but what I want to share with you is my degree from the school of hard knocks. I think that I have finally learned something from all the mistakes that I have made in the past. I can not begin to tell you how much time and money I wasted in the pursuit for the perfect work at home solution. I think that the reason for my lack of success was lack of understanding how to start the process. In my case, just answering an ad for a company needing sales people for their product was a losing proposition. I believe the problem was that although I may have liked a product, I did not have a good understanding of the way the sales process works. I think you have to truly believe that the product is something that is a blessing to the person you are trying to sell it to. If you don't have that belief, it is very hard to be genuine in getting someone who trusts you to buy it. Let's face it, in the end, your reputation is on the line for any product you sell to someone else. If you don't have your customers best interest at heart, in the end, you may be the one to pay the price. Who wants to be the person that friends have to check the caller id so see if they want to talk to you? So, what is the answer? Well, in my case I discovered that I needed to start the process by learning a lot about myself and my passions. Pick up some great books and start reading. "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is a great place to start. Other books to read could include "Thou Shall Prosper", "No More Mondays" "Book Yourself Solid" and so many many others. I think in this group, we can help each other understand that working at home is a building process and it has to be tailored to be a great fit. Once it is correctly structured to fit our life style, our desires, our strengths and gifts, we will have something that we are successful at, enjoy, and profit from.
