Do you take your special needs child to mass with you?  We did when Simon was younger, but he is now 5 1/2.  He is profoundly mentally handicapped and physically handicapped also.  He is a very good little boy, but he's LOUD.  I can't keep him quiet.  He "talks" the whole time and even if we sit in the back (no cry-room), I really feel that he is disruptive.  There are some families who think we've put him away in a home or something, because they never see him!

Thanks,
Gretchen

You made me giggle when you mentioned the loud issue.
My eight year old Christina who has Down syndrome loves going to Church, and has really improved in settling down in her seat this year, however she loves to sing loudly, tunelessly, and not necessarily when the congregation sings. It had led to children turning around and staring at her, but, thankfully the adults in our parish are very understanding!

This is a HUGE issue for us.  I hang on to this thought though...he needs the graces.  A priest friend told me this once and I really believe it.  My son is 8yrs and severelly disabled, physically as well as mentally and in a wheelchair.  But he does not sit still in the chair.  My husband takes him out into the lobby almost every Sunday while I try to manage an infant, 2y/o and 4y/o.  So it is truly a Sacrafice.  I do hold onto the fact that the Mass is really called "The Holy Sacrafice of the Mass".  So you know, it is not supposed to be easy.

I will pray for you guys when I am struggling tomorrow.  I forgot to mention that most Sunday's he also chooses to have a BM (#2) right in the middle of Mass and he is too big to change him on a changing table in the bathroom so we have to be super creative!  It is certainly humbling, but that is what brings us back to Christ and His sacred heart. I ask Our Lady to give me the grace to make it through the Mass charitably, that works most of the time too!

Many Blessings!
