The Community for Catholic Moms

I'm a special needs PREP teacher at my parish, and in addition to my 7-year-old son, I'm getting three other children in the group ready for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in the coming school year. Does anyone have any experience with this? The youth education director at the parish is great. The kids will have an abbreviated Act of Contrition, and we're trying to give them a very basic knowledge of the sacraments.

Let me know if you know of any resources I could use. The most basic I could find on the Internet were the St. Joseph's illustrated Going to Confession and Receiving First Holy Communion.

Thanks!

The best book I have ever seen for first communion is The weight of a mass.

here is a link to the book on amazon:

MY son will hopefully be confirmed this year. I was stressed during his First Penance and First Holy Communion, but in that age group, educational issues aren't as bad since it seems that all children differ quite a bit at that stage in regards to reading abilities.

While my son can't get into a deep theological discussion, he does have a solid faith in the Real Presence and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We did use those St Joseph books. Now at 14, I find that it is really helpful to find a priest that really knows my son when it comes to going to Penance.
I was thinking of taking my almost 7 year old son Mario to a special needs CCD. He really is not verbal and has a lot of issues with communication. I don't think he has any understanding at this point of God or Church. So I am curious as to what other Moms might have to share about this. I would love for him to be able to receive Communion one day. The first time I took him to Mass with me, when the Priest raised up the bread, Mario said "Eat! Eat!" Then with the Cup, he said "Drink!" :-)

One very precious memory I have is when Mario was about 4 years old, I was watching our DVD of "The Passion Of The Christ." I let Mario watch the happy parts of it and he seemed to really like it. You know the scene of when Jesus is building the table and Mary is talking with Him...at the end of that scene Jesus hugs Mary and kisses her on the cheek. Mario copied this as he watched it and kissed me on my cheek. That was the first time he ever gave me a kiss! :-)
