The Community for Catholic Moms

Thank you for starting this, Lisa! I think it's so easy for conscientious moms to utterly neglect caring for ourselves "physically, emotionally, and spiritually" as you have said. At least I do most of the time! Just joining this group inspired me to talk to my dh this evening about getting exercise in my life more consistently. He is so encouraging, I just lack discipline! I actually might order this crazy work-out video called PX90 (I think that's what it's called). It's hard core, but you can do everything from home with free weights and a pull up bar. No gym membership required. And it's not just jumping up and down in place--it's geared towards serious toning and cardiovascular fitness (which I truly want). Has anyone tried something similar? Or found another at home work-out regimen that works for them? I like the gym, but it's tough to get out regularly with 3 kids 5 years old and under. Plus, the membership fees add up. And I like exercising in front of the kids--it's a good example and they like to participate! :)

Michele - great to hear from you!! I know we have a few P90Xers, and also our good friend Greg Willits of the Rosary Army has said great things about the program. I do know it's pretty intense, but it sounds like you're game for the challenge. If you do decide to go for it, be sure to keep us posted. Anybody who's tried it, please share your reviews ok?
I have a set of DVDs called The 8-Minute Workout. 2 DVDs: one includes 8-Minute Buns and 8-Minute Legs, and the other includes 8-minute Abs and 8-Minute Arms. Both also have warm-up stretches and sample workouts for things like step aerobics and kickboxing, which I don't care for. I like the 8-minute workouts because i have 8 kids, aged 10 down to 9 months, and can't go out for exercise much. Even going outside for a walk is a major event that needs planning. I can do these inside, and the kids find them fun as well. I try to do at lease one each morning, and occasionally I do one more in the afternoon. They target the area in each title, and I can go at my own pace. When I do them regularly and drink plenty of water, I feel energized and alert.
I just got back into doing the Windsor Pilates DVD. Twenty minutes and I feel great! It's tough, but if you are short for time and don't like jumping around, Pilates does cardio and stretching, and strength training. Very efficient and the cost of a DVD and a mat.
Michele, you are right about taking care of ourselves being a lack of discipline. I have a chance to get to daily Mass this year for the first time in decades, and am asking the Lord for the strength to exercise the same discipline in taking care of His temple. I also started a new diet, to make sure that the workout isn't overshadowed by my bad eating habits.
I'll report any progress here, so you can encourage me.
Thank you all for your replies! I do agree that the fact that PX90 requires 1 hour a day is extreme and probably unrealistic for me (Tracy, thank you for your wise comments about the time requirements). I do really love weight training and love the idea that this offers serious toning with no fancy machines. I don't want to be imprudent or neglect any of my mom or homemaking duties, but I know the benefits of a good exercise regimen are so far reaching in my life. I honestly think i might go for it! Paula, that 8-minute workout sounds so practical! And I like the idea of Pilates that you suggested, Leticia. I've done some of this in the past and felt like I got good results. I appreciate the focus on the core area (my worst section...and so important for before and after babies!). I totally agree with what you said about daily mass too, Leticia. I used to go and I've slacked lately. I'm honestly not sure how to get it all in (prayer time, exercise time, some recreation time amidst the all consuming mommy duties, homeschooling and housekeeping duties). I think I might just give this exercise program a try and the worst that could happen is that I would save it for a later season in my life like Tracy said. Bless you all! It's so fun to have this community!
My husband owns P90X and I've tried it a few times. It is a great work out. I find that with 3 children under 4 I often get pulled away from it. I know that it is more expensive to have a gym membership, but I make it a financial priority to belong to our local Y. They provide an hour and twenty mins. of free child care each day. I can mix up the routine with the variety of classes and use their lap pool, which is rejuvenating. This year, I am planning to train for either a half marathon or a triathlon. Making a goal for myself will hopefully motivate me to train and make time to exercise. It sounds like you are determined to keep fit and healthy. If you'd like, let's keep in touch to encourage each other and exchange ideas about what has been working for us.
God bless.
Susan
Hi Susan! Thank you so much for the reply to my post! I would love to keep in touch with you and encourage each other! That's something I'm definitely lacking. I don't really know anyone else in my situation (3 young kids, stay-at-home mom committed to exercise). I actually started the P90X, but am seriously modifying it to be more realistic. I only get it in a few times a week, instead of every day. And some of the work-outs that are supposed to be like 1hr & 20 minutes got cut short due to toddler interference! I'm still figuring this out, but I would love encouragement to keep going! Bravo to you for trying to train for a half marathon or a triathalon! Wow!!! I don't think I will ever reach that level. You are my hero! :)
