The Community for Catholic Moms

Hi everyone! Just joined the community today and am delighted to have found you. My biggest spiritual struggle as a homeschooling mom of 3 young kids has to do with "personal" prayer time. I'd just like to hear anyone else's thoughts on reasonable expectations for somebody in my (our) position, plus any tips for incorporating it into an already packed day with very little time alone. I hope it's a discussion that can benefit all of us! Blessings!

I have a subscription to Magnificat whch has morning/evening/night prayers and the Mass readings for the day. I have an early rising toddler who gets me up at 5 AM, so no "quiet" morning time for this mom. After the toddler has eaten, snuggled, examined the inside of the fridge three times and begged for some form of candy twice, she usually asks to watch "dog" - Kipper - which I stream from netflix on my computer. While she watches, I say a morning offering, read through the morning prayers in the Magnificat and try to read through the Mass readings and any other "homilies" that they have. I then put the Magnificat on my bedside table where I won't miss it. Before going to sleep, I do the night prayers.

I do prayers with my children during the day (rosary at night, table blessing at meals, Hail Mary for a siren, a brief morning offering for them), but other than that, my main "personal" prayer between 8 AM and 8 PM is "Lord, have mercy" generally said while on the run or while cleaning a disaster.
I think the "Lord, have mercy" is quite a good summary of my daily prayer too. I actually made an appt with our pastor for some spiritual direction for this stage in my life.
Hi!
I find this interesting as a working out of the home mom. Personal, quiet time is a minimum as well. Like many of the other answers, I work my prayers in while in the van driving to work (40min commute) or any other time that I'm driving, and at night before bed. My night time prayers are often short as I'm usually tired by the end of the day.

When I do get more time - rarely - then I set in for more meditative prayers. I've often asked my husband to do "kid-watch" after they are in bed (meaning he tends to them if they wake up) so I can get more quiet time like that.

I hope that helps, and thanks for the question!

Blessings to all,
Tammy
My nine children are grown now but there were many, many times when 15 or 20 minutes were all I could manage. I'd read the daily scriptures and pray for quick inspirations and then go through my litany of prayer intentions. Good luck.
