So, what do you say when someone, trying to be well-meaning, looks at your child and asks "do you like him?" like he's a car that you're talking options on? I just looked back and said "We're very blessed to have our kids. We love them."
Thank God he's just a toddler and it went right over his head.

I give an amazed look and say "I can't believe you would say such a thing", and possibly add "particularly in front of (child's name)". It is more important to support the child than to "be nice" in teaching appropriate questions to an adult. My child needs to know it is an inappropriate question. I've also said "that is not an appropriate way to ask a question, do you need some help to rephrase it?" The adults who want to learn accept the help, the ignorant leave and my children hear a strong answer.
"Do you like him?"

"Yes, I love him with all my heart ... Not so enamored with YOU right this minute..."

The nerve of some people.
