Hello all! I am just tickled pink that there is a group for Denver. My husband and I have been living in the great state of CO for about 3 years now...and love the Archdiocese! I taught at Blessed Sacrament for a couple years and now stay at home with my son. We belong to Our Lady of Loreto and love it! Whew! (long-winded). Looking forward to meeting more Catholic Denver-ites ;^)

Hi all my name is Kathleen and I just joined. We live in Meeker which is about 4 hours from Denver but are still part of the Archdiocese of Denver. I grew up not too far from Denver and my parents and siblings now all live in the Denver area so I am very familiar with the city too!

Hi Joseph! Glad to have you here on F&F Connect! You are lucky to get to go to the Biblical School here. I hope when I retire, I will be able to do that as well! Why did you "pick" St. Thomas More in Centennial when you live in Aurora? Just curious....we live in Brighton but belong to Holy Ghost parish in downtown Denver.

Hello all, I just relocated to Denver to pursue my graduate studies in Marriage & Family Therapy, with a specialization in Child & Adolescent Counseling, at Regis University.
My first month or so I did some "parish shopping" but have now settled in at St. Thomas More in Centennial.
I'm looking forward to starting school next month, as well as the Archdiocese's Catholic Biblical School--a four year program covering all the books of the bible, in depth.

Oh, we know Fr. Ron, but he's not at our parish. We do, however, live right near the parish he's at now! We go to St. Peter's in Greeley because it serves the UNC students and my husband is a FOCUS missionary.
I just saw your comment about camping in the Canadian Rockies! How FUN! We love to camp (but can't take too long of trips since I'm pregnant and have 3 little ones) and just adore living in Colorado for that reason. :-)

Hi Andrea! We are in Brighton, so not too terribly far from Greeley. Do you have Fr. Ron at your parish? He used to be here in Brighton and moved to Greeley a while ago.

Good to see you on here!

Hi JoJo,
Your daughter sounds like me a bit - I had seven brothers, and two sisters, but my sisters were older and I was surrounded by boys. It actually was okay as I was definitely a tomboy type! :-)

I have heard of TORCH, but there are no groups near us. The homeschool groups we belong to are in Aurora or in the Broomfield/Arvada area, so it is a bit of a drive. I think I need to work on getting a Catholic homeschool group going out here. My daughter, Sarah, is married and has two small children and she is looking to start a group as well. It would definitely help if we could find some people closer to Brighton!
Does the TORCH group at your church allow people from other parishes to join?

I am glad to hear that your surgery went well! That must have been a difficult thing to go through! Are you fully recovered yet? Homeschooling five kids is not an easy task, I am sure. We used to use Catholic Heritage Curriculum, but I thought it was just too easy. Having only one child to teach does make it a lot easier to pick and choose what we learn from year to year. I have heard that COVA is pretty time consuming, and I don't want that much structure, especially when I only have the one. If I had several kids at home, I would definitely need more structure!

We also use an umbrella school, though I am thinking of changing to a different one. A friend of mine uses a Catholic one that is very inexpensive, I guess, and she is supposed to be letting me know about it soon. When she does, I will pass it on.

You said earlier that you like roadtrips. Do you go every year somewhere? Do you go, like us, during the school year when things aren't so crowded? We like to travel as well, and just got back from a camping trip in the Canadian Rockies. Next year we will be doing the East Coast, after our son graduates from school in Connecticut.

Hope you had a restful Sunday and Father's Day!

Hello, Carolyn -- (That was my mom's name, BTW -- great name!)

We have friends in Brighton (not Catholic, tho). Our children's ages and grades are the following: James 5 going into K, Joe 8 starting 3rd, Emma 11 starting 6th, Will 14 starting 9th, Tim 16 starting 12th (!), and Matt 19 (delayed entry in the Navy -- already enlisted, but waiting for basic training).

My poor only daughter has 5 brothers! If we do get together at some point, she'd love playing w/Bernadette, as she adores younger girls, too. Her group of homeschool friends at our church ranges in age from toddler through middle schoolers! We have a very active homeschool group (TORCH) at St. Francis, if you are interested. There are more girls closer in age to your daughter there, too.

We used COVA last year (K12) because it was our first year returning home after several years in public school....We are undecided about the coming year. I would love to venture out on our own, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that at this point. I had brain surgery 9 weeks ago -- thankfully, I'm doing well now. But I just don't know if I'll have the time/energy to put together my own stuff for 5 kids....We may do another year of COVA; just not sure yet.

My oldest 2 boys are going to be using a mix of materials, enrolled through West River Academy (secular umbrella school). They do a LOT of music, and COVA isn't really suitable for high schoolers who have other interests (we found out last year!). Here's info, if you're interested:
http://www.westriveracademy.com/

I will probably use COVA for grades K-8, only because it is a nice, comprehensive program with a lot of flexibility. I dislike the testing aspect of it (CSAPs!), but it's one small thing to put up with. The pluses are currently outweighing the negatives.

Have a nice Father's Day tomorrow w/your family! :)

Hi JoJo! We are homeschooling our 8 year old daughter (3rd Grade next year) and we actually looked today at a house in Mead, which is very close to Longmont. We live in Brighton now, but our business is located in Mead, so it would be nicer to be closer to the business.

Is your 3rd grader a girl by any chance? Our daughter Bernadette is always looking for girls to become friends with! :-)

We also enjoy roadtrips and spending time in the kitchen. We also are pretty eclectic on the homeschooling part of things, but we are going to use Mother of Divine Grace this year. What kind of curriculum, if any, do you use with your kids?

Congratulations on your son joining the Navy! Our son is going into his fourth year at the Coast Guard Academy.
