I love this idea!!!
Yes!
Here are some links to commentary: Fr. Z's "encyclibites" and a symposium with Fr. Schall, Michael Novak & others offer preliminary observations at The Catholic Thing.

How shall we proceed? Perhaps just chapter by chapter? Let's start now with questions and observations about the Introduction and Chapter One, and in a few days we'll move on to chapter two.
GB, I think I know what you mean. I don't find it intimidating, but in places it is less than clear --or at least not the precise and lucid language I'm used to from the Holy Father. (There are even a couple of sentences which appear to me poorly translated as they are hard to make sense of.) As a B16 groupie, I think I can tell which passages were written directly by the Holy Father and which by others (though obviously, since he signed it, the entire thing is Benedict's & I'm not suggesting otherwise).

What also takes time is trying to discern what problems he has in mind in specific passages, rather than reading everything through the lens of American politics.

I have also found it helps with encyclicals to pray before reading them!
Great Idea excellent
