The Community for Catholic Moms

I have been blessed to learn NFP while engaged and have practiced NFP and ecological breastfeeding for spacing our children through out our marriage. My husband and I also became certified NFP teachers through CCL in the sympto-thermal method in 2003. I believe that this is a very important aspect of living our faith in our marriages and hope to see more discussions. I look forward to sharing this part of my life with other Catholic Moms who have questions.

Hi Maria-Helena,
Can you recommend a book and/or website for good information about ecological breastfeeding? I'm currently nursing #6 at 1 year old and am not sure when she will wean, but need more info about the relationship btw nursing and return of fertility. Thanks!
As we teach and use the sympto-thermal method, CCL's website came to mind immediately...

Here's the shopping link and info for the specific book that would answer your questions...

Our La Leche League had Sheila Kippley's book titled, I believe, Ecological Breastfeeding. I might be fuzzy on the spelling of her name or the title of the book. It completely outlines how Ecological Breastfeeding works, which may complement the information in the CCL textbook. I have the CCL textbook but read Ecological Breastfeeding cover to cover a few years ago. It's an interesting read.
Great! Thank you.
No problem. # 6, huh? Wow!! Congratulations!! You are truly blessed!!
I used ecological breast feeding myself, and would recommend it. I am interested in taking the training course for Napro-technology, or the Creighton method developed by Dr Hilgers at the Pope Paul VI Institute in Nebraska. It seems to be able to offer hope not only to space children, but to overcome infertility naturally with an 80% success rate. What a blessing this is to many couples for whom nothing has worked.
The Sisters of LIfe are hosting a one week training in Stamford, CT next September.
That is good information. I have ecologically breastfed all 5 of my children.... 9 1/2+ years of breastfeeding under my belt and still counting. It has helped us space our children 2 - 2 1/2 years apart. Now that we need a break from having more children, we are back to sympto-thermal charting. Our 26 month old still nurses. Developmentally, he is only somewhere between 9 and 15 months old - depending on which area of his development they are testing him on - and I'm not sure when he will finally wean. I have a feeling that, as we are in the process of purchasing a house, the move may help lead him toward weaning. We'll see!!
Great topic !

I ecologically breastfed all three of my children and remember experiencing post partum ammenohria for almost 2 years.

However, after my third pregnancy, I developed peripartum cardiomyapathy (Congestive Heart Failure associated with a pregnancy). Weaning my baby was the HARDEST think I have ever done in my life but knew I had to due to the strong heart medications I was on. If I had known that my nursing experience with her would be cut short at 8 months, I would've cherished every moment I had while nursing her.

My Catholic cardiologist strongly recommended not getting pregnant again as the possibility of CHF recurring is really high. He says it would be a miracle if the baby and I both even make it to the third trimester. With God's help and against all recommendations from family & friends to get "fixed", my husband and I decided to continue to use NFP and are very happy with it. CCL wrote an article about our experience and we were glad to have been able to share our stories with other moms with life-threatening illnesses.

Blessings to all and cherish these days with your nursing babies !
Wow, your chances of breast cancer must be ZERO! What a mom!!!
At 7 years of ecological breastfeeding, the chances are supposed to be approx. 0% chance of breast cancer... I'm hoping that this holds true since 2 aunts in Germany had breast cancer. To date, I think that I have accumulated 8+ years of nursing... and still counting!!
Sheila Kippley of NFP International is an expert on EBF and has written several books on the subject, including The 7 Standards of Ecological Breastfeeding. I reviewed it here: http://www.katewicker.com/2008/12/ecological-breastfeeding-book-rev....

I EBF and have found it to be a wonderful way of naturally spacing children (I haven't charted since my first was born in 2004). I will say our third baby does need a paci occasionally b/c of severe reflux. She cries when I try to nurse her if she's no truly hungry but still has a need to suck. This has been a challenge for me (since my other girls, especially my first, definitely nursed for comfort, too) and we'll see how it affects my fertility.

God bless, and happy nursing!
Oh, there you go! I should have kept reading. It is a great book! Enjoy nursing your little one; frequent nursing like that can be a challenge (my first three boys seemed to forever want a nurse). But it does go by so quickly, doesn't it?? Once it's over I mean.
