Hi,
My youngest son has autism and is very sensitive to gluten. Do any ladies here have people in your families who need to be on a gluten free diet or other special dietary restrictions?

One source I've found that is very helpful is Living Without magazine. It's kind of hard to find without a subscription though.

My grandfather has the same issue.

1) Gluten Free Homemaker

The gluten free homemaker sponsors a WEEKLY blog carnival called: What can I eat?. This carnival allows other bloggers to post their gluten free recipes and link them to Gluten Free Homemaker's site.

You can also use Google's BLOG search to find other bloggers that blog about gluten free recipes. You use google's BLOG search just like the normal google search, but the BLOG search limits the searches to just blogs.

"The Gluten-Free Gourmet" is a very helpful cookbook! And I really liked the "gluten-free pantry" mixes. You can find them in the health food store. Freeze the bread after you slice it and you can pull out slices for just your son. When my daughter was allergic to wheat I would cook a little bit of rice pasta for her and regular for the rest of the family since the special pasta is so expensive.

Thank you Gwen! I have seen Gluten Free Pantry mentioned here and there online. I will have to try their stuff. So far my favorite mixes have been from Pamela's, but I keep trying all the different kinds to see what we like the most. Sounds like GF Pantry is pretty popular.

I do that too, make some special pasta just for my son and regular for the rest of us. He seems to like the quinoa-based pastas the best.

I am a bit late adding to this conversation, but my eldest is Celiac and Diabetic. I am not sure what area you live in but most grocery stores now carry gluten free products. The Gluten Free Pantry is a gold mine! Things to remember: Some of it tastes really awful and 9x out of 10 it is packed with a lot of calories. There is a ton of junk food too.

Best breads come from Ener-g.com.! Taste: tapioca light bread.

Bobs Red Mill Flour: Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour
For the first time in 7 years I made homemade chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that were fabulous! I used the recipe off the back of the toll house chips and substituted this flour, but have xanthan gum from Bob's Redmill on hand too.

At our house any recipe that calls for 2 TBSP of flour I use All Purpose Gluten Free flour, no one knows the diff. Hope this helps, God Bless
I'm coming into this late, but I just wanted to say that I'm a celiac and have to keep a very strict gluten free diet for myself.

I actually don't really like Living Without, personally, because I find it to be rather "debby downer." There's a lot of discussion about what you CAN'T have and not a ton of positive stories about what you CAN have and the great things that have come from going gluten free.

I relied mostly on GF blogs when I was first diagnosed (three years ago now). I also received Gluten Free for Dummies and Carol Fenster's Gluten Free book as gifts, and found them both helpful and easy to use.

I make my own bread using a Breadman bread machine (which has a gluten free setting!...adapts the kneading/cooking time accordingly) and use primarily Bette Hagman's Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread and have adapted those for my own tastes.

Also really late to the discussion but I recently read about a cookbook (I think on the daily forum) called "A Year of Slow Cooking." I guess this lady vowed to only cook in her crockpot for a whole year--anyway all of her reciepes are gluten free. Her website is: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com The person who was talking about it really liked it--and wasn't using it because it was gluten free but rather because the food was good.
That sounds great! I love to use my crockpot, it makes things so much easier on the nights I've got supper ready ahead of time. I will definitely look into that.

Ooh, one more thing: if you're planning on using condensed soups for casseroles and/or crock pot meals, Health Valley's Organic Cream of Mushroom soup is GF. You can also make these condensed soup bases, but I'm a "can-buyer" if I can find it...making the cream of mushroom soup from scratch kind of defeats the "easy, throw-into-the-crock-pot" meal appeal, doesn't it?
