Baby Nutrition/Health (0- 15 months give or take)

Hey Friends,

I am writing looking for some ideas and help with feeding my 12 month old.

It's been a few years since I had a 12 month old. My daughters are 4 1/2 years apart. My 12 month old has been my 1st to exclusively nurse (I pumped to a bottle for my oldest) so I've had a lot of trouble to get her to now use a sippy cup. She still has not gotten the hang of it. Also, she is still figuring out how to feed herself with puff and little finger foods. She has the pincher grasp down like a champ, but aside from large rice biscuits that she feeds herself, doesn't feed the tiny things to herself yet. She has started solid foods (pureed), and now has 3 teeth coming in.

Also, like my eldest, she is also on the tiny side. My pediatrician has not been too worried since every appt she has grown - if only in the 10th percentile. I've been very happy with this. She is not crawling yet, but again, not a worry - she scoots on the hardwoods, and can stand with support. Because she has consistently grown, everyone has been fine with her development - even though she is small.

Well, her 12 month appt brought some concern. She is still at her 9 month weight (15.9 lbs) she has gotten taller - but since her weight dropped off they wanted to both get some blood tests done next week, and bump up her food choices now that she is 12 months and past some of the 9 month allergies. Welcome to the world of dairy and egg yolks, beans, tofu, hummus, avocado, etc. She's still nursing a lot (I love nursing, and with the whole avoidance issue she has with cups I still want to make sure she gets all that good momma milk)!

I need some support. Even though she is TOTALLY interactive, happy, belly laughing, alert, scooting baby, she is my little peanut. I felt responsible for her lack of weight gain (though the doctor said it wasn't me or us - just her current place on the growth chart) and the blood tests are not "stat" - but I would love some words from moms who have been there!

What you tried to get your baby to like:
~ a sippy cup
~ finger foods
~ whole milk

and what foods have you used to:
~ add healthy fats
~ introduce table foods
~ encourage weight gain
~ all over nutrition
~ independent eating

and of course, anything that fits those categories! Recipes are welcome!!

I did not realize this forum was here, so I posted this on a new group "Kids and Parenting Corner". Sorry for the duplication!

Thanks so much! God Bless!

my daughter is 13 months and has never been a big solid food eater, but my daughter is on the opposite end of the growth chart. as far as a sippy, the only one my daughter could figure out is the born free. i mostly give her water, whole milk on occasion and smoothies. we offer sips from our regular cups as well, which she loves! have you tried giving your daughter bigger foods? we started with a banana, like half of a banana. she seemed to eat more when she could hold it and take bites. you do have to watch the baby closely so they don't take too big of a bite, but my daughter does pretty well with it. we also give slices of cucumbers, zucchini, whole green beans, whole strawberries, etc. avocado is a great healthy fat food. i do find it is hard for my daughter to pick up because it is slippery. other favorites at our house are cheese (i give her shredded) and yogurt.

lately my daughter will not eat much in her high chair, so i have been feeding her while she stands or sits on the kitchen floor. it seems like she doesn't want to take a break from playing. good luck. i'll be watching this to see more tips since my daughter still is in the mostly nursing phase!
My daughter has always been in the middle of the growth charts, and was a very late starter on solids (by my estimate, was still getting about three-quarters of her calories from breastmilk at 18mos!) so I don't have a lot of advice on what/how to get them to eat to gain weight. But I just wanted to suggest trying a straw cup. Maybe you've tried that, but if not, my daughter couldn't use a sippy until she was almost two but caught on to straw cups at around 7 months. A lot of my breastfeeding friends have also reported their kids had easier times with straw cups than sippies. The Playtex ones are not leak-proof but are easy for babies to use. It's worth a try, anyway!
Lucy and Arwen, Thank you for commenting.

I'm so glad to know others have faced this. Lucy - I will start more bigger foods. I tried some with breakfast today and her gag reflex seemed less sensitive! Maybe we are making strides with the new exposure foods! I need to try the raw veggies..your 13 month old really chews the raw ok? (You'd think I'd remember all this with our eldest, but she is almost 6 - we wanted our kids closer together but Someone had His own plans...another topic lol - but I don't, plus I was in school at night then so we did things differently then). I'll try the shredded cheese too!

Arwen - Thank you! I actually heard the same thing about straw sippy cups and nursed babies. I tried one last week to no success...but the straw is narrow and small like adult straws. One of my friends just told me they make ones that are wider straws. I'm going to find those and try them next. I don't care if they are not leak proof - if she learns to love one...I'll jump for joy by the next doc appt LOL!! I say this because with nursing was I ever leak proof? NEVER...hehe! Leak proof is SO overrated!

Much love and thanks!
BIG UPDATE!!!

Baby Valiant ate by HERSELF, two chicken nuggets (healthy ones!) and drank with her own hands from a sippy cup, one of those disposable ones (funny how she didn't want the more $$ ones I tried, hehe, my thrifty daughter!)

I'm working on all the great food suggestions here. I just wanted to update my happiness! :) THANK YOU for your help!!
Yeah for Baby V! And for mama too. Keep up the good work!
Hello All!

I wanted to update that we are doing GREAT! Since this post, we went slow, but she is now loving all table food, and sippy cups! You all helped me SO much!!! I could not have done this without all your support and suggestions.

Thank you!! I hope to help more of you in the future, in appreciation!

When I know her weight, I'll let you all know!
