Does anyone know of a Saint who was a soldier? I know of St. Ignatius of Loyola but I was hoping to find someone more recent. My son likes the soldier idea but I have a hard time convincing him to be a Saint and not a comic character.
My daughters on the other had are going to be: St. Thecla, St. Joan of Arc and St. Elizabeth of Hungary this year.

Maybe try St. Michael the Archangel. Any party store sells the breastplate shield and sword (about $10). Get some big wings and a cape. My daugter (3) really wants to wear this for our Saints party but I was hoping for something a little more ahem.. girlie.:) We'll see...
There is also St George...a knight. When I taught, the little boys would inevitably choose St. George or St. Michael for the whole sword factor.
Funny but he isn't interested in a sword this year. We have done St. Michael and St. Martin in previous years. He wants a gun and to wear camo. I figure out of all the men who have died for our country that someone has to be a saint. The problem is to find one that is canonized!
He's not a Saint yet, but how about the Servant of God Fr. Vincent Capodanno, also known as "The Grunt Padre":

I just stumbled upon a Catholic Military site that has list of military saints and blesseds. I didn't look at them all, but there has to be something there! www.catholicmil.org (look in the "prayers" drop down menu)
My brother once went to an All Saints Day party dressed in plain clothes and said that he was representing unknown saints. All the men and women whose sanctity is known to God alone. Perhaps, you could go with combat wear and suggest that he represents unknown soldiers who died in the grace of God.
My son's Confirmation saint is St. Hubert of Aquataine. He is a little more obscure saint, but he is the patron saint of hunters - so camo and a gun could work!
Check out my blog: http://www.viewdomesticchurch.blogspot.com. I have been posting all about the saints and saints' costumes this week.

God bless!

Here in Africa, there are communal and religious crisis. I hate violence. I hate war. I chose St Benedith , Authentic and humble Saint
